Jack's mother had been dead for several months, the victim of her alcoholism. Because I'd managed to get access to him after 5 years of forced separation by paying his grandparents, we'd now been reunited.
I'd discovered that he'd been unwell for several years and no-one had been able to identify what was wrong with him. So, I decided to take him to his GP to discuss it as I was very concerned.
The reception I received from the doctor was hostile from the start. He told me that he wasn't prepared to discuss Jack's health with me despite the fact that he was still a minor and I had parental responsibility. He would only hear me. So, I went through all of the symptoms Jack had told me about and the doctor then insisted I leave the room!
His mother, her parents and Social Services had really done a job on me! This to the point where even medical professionals were hostile and refused to engage with me.
Jack did his best but, yet again, he was fobbed off with 'health anxiety'.
Once he came home to me, I was able to pursue the matter more actively. Later, he was diagnosed as having a hole in his heart, the product of fetal alcohol syndrome.
A plague on all their houses!
